How to find the difference between Real and fake pearls.
Pearls are the most valued gems in the world. Symbol of purity and chastity,
when you go to buy pearls, the first question comes in mind “Is this a genuine pearl?”. or imitation pearls which are made to look as beautiful and expensive as real pearls. an expert or a person with deep knowledge can make difference between real and fake , it’s almost impossible for a lay person to tell the difference.
As you know fake pearls are man made, which are beads of glass, ceramic or plastic are coated with varnish or some other material to give it a fake luster. Natural pearls are produced by a living creature.
tips to make a difference between a real pearl from a fake one
Touch test:
Real pearls are colder than the surrounding and room temperature untill worn on the body. Even if the weather is warm, real pearls will feel cool. Fake pearls, will not be colder than room temperatures. This is how you can tell by touching.
Weight test:
Real pearls are heavier. Fake are lighter. The nacre the layers of a real pearl is very dense, so its weight is a bit more than plastic or resin – this is the materials used in fake pearls.
Light test
in light, real pearls reflect the light while fake pearls do not reflect light.

where pearls are reflecting the light, so, it is difficult to get the exact colour of the pearl in the pictures .
Shape and Size
Real Pearls are not perfect and exact in shape and size. so never two pearls match with each other (in same string). There will be some variations in their shape, size and colour shade. Fake pearls are perfectly rounded and have almost same sizes.
The tooth test:
when we Rub a real pearl against our front teeth. If natural, we will feel a light friction, irritation or roughness. Fake pearls do not give such feelings .
Bounce Test
When we drop the pearl from 70 cm height on a piece of glass and the rebound height is around 35 cm, it’s a real pearl. during the same test imitation pearls’ rebound height is less .
The fire test
if we burn real pearl a little and clean it
we see the real pearl inside. A fake pearl after little burn looks coal after burnt.
Knife test
scrap off little powder of the pearl, we get a soft and smooth powder. Still we will see the lusture. in fake pearl, the outer layer is gone and see the inner plastic material. The powder will also not be smooth .
